Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans – Medigap Plan C

October 6, 2016

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans are offered by private insurance companies and can help you pay for out-of-pocket costs for services covered under Original Medicare (Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B).

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plan C Benefits

Medicare Supplement Plan C offers benefits that include the standard benefits provided through Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plan A as well as additional coverage. Out of the standardized Medicare Supplement plans, only Medigap Plan F provides more benefits.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plan C benefits include:

  • Medicare Part A hospital coinsurance and hospital costs up to 365 days after Original Medicare benefits are exhausted
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance payment or copayment
  • Medicare Part B copayment or coinsurance payment
  • Part B preventive care coinsurance payment
  • First three pints of blood for a medical procedure
  • Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) care coinsurance
  • Medicare Part A deductible costs
  • Medicare Part B deductible costs
  • Foreign travel emergency coverage (up to plan limits)

Please note that Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plan C does not cover Medicare Part B excess charges. Medicare Part B excess charges are provider expenses that exceed Medicare’s allowed payment for the service with the difference being charged to the patient. For example, if a doctor charges 115% of the amount Medicare allowed amount for a procedure, you would be responsible for the remaining 15% left after the Medicare reimbursement amount is subtracted. Because Medicare Supplement Plan C does not offer coverage for the 15% excess charge, you would have to pay for it yourself.

Insurance companies are required to provide Medigap Plan A if they wish to provide Medigap plans at all, and, if they wish to provide more than Plan A, they must provide either Plan C or Plan F. Whether or not an insurance company offers Medigap Plan C differs by carrier and state. Medicare Supplement Plan C may offer the second most comprehensive level of benefits among the standardized Medigap plans (the first being Medigap Plan F). Be aware that premiums and other out-of-pocket costs may differ between insurance companies, so it is best to shop around to find the right plan for your needs.
