Are you looking to enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan?
The Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period (OEP) is typically the best time to enroll in a Medicare Supplement insurance plan.
The Medicare Supplement OEP starts in the first month a person age 65 or older is covered by Medicare Part B and lasts for six months.
During this enrollment period, your acceptance into a Medicare Supplement plan is guaranteed (as long as you’re enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B and live within the plan’s service area). That is, medical underwriting cannot be used to evaluate your application for Medicare Supplement enrollment, so you cannot be denied Medicare Supplement coverage or be charged a higher premium based on current or previous health problems.
Some states have granted additional Medicare Supplement open enrollment rights for residents of the state. However, a Medicare Supplement plan may be allowed to make you wait for medical services related to a health problem you had prior to joining a Medicare Supplement plan (i.e. a pre-existing condition).
If you wait until after your Medicare Supplement OEP is over, you can still apply, but your acceptance into the plan might not be guaranteed.
There are some exceptions.
If you are considering Medicare Supplement enrollment, there are a few things you need to do.
First, you need to decide which of the ten standardized plan types to choose (with the exception of Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wisconsin residents who have their own unique Medigap plan offerings).
Then, once you have selected a plan type that may fit your needs, you can compare available plan options in your area. Costs for the same plan may not be the same across different insurance companies even if benefits are the same.
To start comparing plans in your area, just enter your zip code where indicated on this page.
