Learn about Medicare Supplement in Tennessee

Tennessee residents enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B have the option of enrolling in a Medicare Supplement (Medigap or MedSupp) plan to cover the out-of-pocket health-care costs that Original Medicare does not cover, including deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and other out-of-pocket costs. In most states, including Tennessee, there are up to ten standardized Medigap policy options, each labeled with a letter. All plans named with the same letter offer the same standard set of benefits. Some companies may offer additional innovative benefits.

There are 10 standardized Medigap plans available in Tennessee, but availability may vary within the state. While each Medigap plan named with the same letter includes the same coverage, the different Medigap plans do have some benefits in common. For example, every plan covers Medicare Part A hospital coinsurance up to 365 days after Original Medicare benefits are used – and no standardized Medicare Supplement plan sold today includes prescription drug coverage.

Plans K and L are considered lower-premium, higher out-of-pocket cost plans and offer less standard coverage than the other plans until enrollees reach the out-of-pocket limit. While most plans cover the entirety of Medicare Part B copayments or coinsurance amounts, Plan K only covers 50% and Plan L only covers 75%. Other coverage details are listed in the chart below.

The Tennessee Plan may be available at a reduced premium if you have worked at least 15 years as an educator or public employee. You typically can’t be denied coverage if you apply within 60 days of your Medicare Part A eligibility. Your premium won’t increase based on your age.
