Learn about Medicare Supplement in South Carolina

As a South Carolina resident enrolled in Original Medicare, Part A and Part B, you might have the option to enroll in a Medicare Supplement (Medigap or MedSupp) plan to cover the out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare does not cover, such as deductibles, copayments. In most states, including South Carolina, there are up to ten standardized Medigap policy options, each labeled with a letter with all plans of the same letter offering the same benefits.

South Carolina Medicare beneficiaries may be able to choose from 10 standardized Medigap plans denoted by the letters A through N. These standard plans each provide the same set of benefits regardless of which company offers them (although some companies may offer additional innovative benefits), but the out-of-pocket costs associated with each may vary. Plans A through N cover at least a portion of the following set of standard benefits:

  • Hospital coverage after Original Medicare benefits run out, for a lifetime maximum of 365 days
  • Part A hospital coinsurance
  • First three pints of blood used in a medical procedure each calendar year
  • Hospice care

Medigap plans K and L require beneficiaries to pay higher out-of-pocket costs, but may have lower monthly premiums. These plans offer somewhat less coverage than the rest of the lettered Medigap plans. For example, Plan K only covers 50% of the cost of the first three pints of blood and Plan L only covers 75% of hospice cost-sharing. After you pay the yearly deductible the plan will pay 100% of Medicare-approved costs for the rest of the year.
