Learn about Medicare Supplement in South Dakota

South Dakota residents enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B may have the option to enroll in a Medicare Supplement (Medigap or MedSupp) plan to cover the health-care costs that Medicare Part A and Part B don’t cover, including deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and other out-of-pocket costs. In most states, including South Dakota, there are up to ten standardized Medigap policy options, each labeled with a letter. All plans of the same letter offer the same benefits, although some companies may offer additional innovative benefits.

Standardized Medicare Supplement plans offered in South Dakota (as in most other states) may offer some coverage for certain Medicare-approved out-of-pocket costs, such as those listed below. However, please be aware that different standardized Medigap plans cover different portions of these benefits or don’t cover some of them at all.

  • Blood (first three pints)
  • Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
  • Part A coinsurance and hospital costs up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are exhausted
  • Hospice care coinsurance or copayment
  • Part B coinsurance or copayment, excess charge, and deductible
  • Emergency care when traveling abroad (only up to the plan’s limits)

Please note that Medicare Supplement plans currently sold in South Dakota generally do not offer coverage for prescription drugs, long-term care such as care in nursing homes, routine vision or dental care, hearing aids or eyeglasses, or private-duty nursing. The same is true in other states.
