Are you a Medicare beneficiary who lives in two states? Original Medicare, Part A and Part B, is not restricted by a service network. If you’re a dual resident of two states, this type of Medicare insurance will provide coverage wherever you choose to live within the United States. Medicare coverage generally extends to the District of Columbia and the U.S. territories: Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands).
Dual residency: can you be a resident of two states?
Dual residency may become more complicated for those who receive their Medicare coverage through a Medicare Advantage plan or a stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan. This is because many Medicare Advantage and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans require you to stay within their coverage networks, and they don’t always extend across state or even county lines. To enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan or Medicare Prescription Drug Plan, you must be a permanent resident in the service area of the plan. If you plan on traveling, or spend time in different parts of the country, ask your plan representative if you can live in two different states and still be covered.
Dual residency and Medicare Supplement plans
If you have dual residency, you might want to learn about Medicare Supplement insurance. Medigap (Medicare Supplement) policies are standardized in most states. Each standard, lettered Medicare Supplement policy covers the same basic benefits wherever you buy the plan. For example, a Medicare Supplement Plan F in Vermont covers the same benefits as a Plan F in Pennsylvania. However, some plans might offer extra benefits as well. (Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wisconsin have their own standardized plans.)
If you have a Medicare Supplement policy, you can keep it if you move to another state; but if you’re a dual resident of two states, you may want to call your plan to find out the details. Or, you can call Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) 24 hours a day, seven days a week. TTY users can call 1-877-486-2048.
