Learn about Medicare Supplement in Oklahoma

Oklahoma residents enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B have the option to enroll in a Medicare Supplement (Medigap or MedSupp) plan to cover the healthcare costs that Original Medicare does not cover, including deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and other out-of-pocket costs. In most states, there are ten standardized Medigap policy options, each labeled with a letter with all plans of the same letter offering the same benefits.

There are certain times that Oklahoma Medicare beneficiaries have guaranteed issue rights for Medigap plans. During these times, insurance companies must sell policies to beneficiaries, must cover any pre-existing conditions, and are unable to charge more for a policy because of health problems. The most common guaranteed issue rights period is during a beneficiary’s Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which lasts six months and begins on the first day of the month that a beneficiary is both 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this enrollment period, insurance companies cannot use medical underwriting to deny policy coverage. Other special circumstances qualify a beneficiary for a guaranteed issue rights period, such as:

  • Loss of a Medicare Advantage plan: Oklahoma beneficiaries have 63 days from the last day of their Medicare Advantage plan service to enroll in a Medigap policy. This option is only available if a beneficiary switches to
Original Medicare and not into another Medicare Advantage plan.
  • Company bankruptcy: If the insurance company offering a beneficiary’s Medicare plan coverage goes bankrupt or closes, the beneficiary has the guaranteed issue right to enroll in any Medigap plan offered by another
    company.
