If I enroll in a Medigap plan, will it also cover my spouse?

No. Most Medicare plans only cover an individual’s health care coverage, and Medigap plans are no different. You may be able to enroll in a Medigap plan if you already have Original Medicare (Part A and Part B), but this coverage does not extend to your spouse. If your spouse is also Medicare-eligible, then he/she must enroll in a separate Medigap policy to obtain coverage. The best time for beneficiaries to enroll in a Medigap plan is during their Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which is a six-month period that begins on the first day of the month that they are both 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this time, insurance companies may not use medical underwriting to deny coverage, and beneficiaries have the guaranteed issue right to enroll in a plan of their choosing (although waiting periods may apply).
