Can I enroll in a Medicare Part D plan, Medigap plan, or Medicare Advantage plan if I am not enrolled in Medicare?

October 6, 2016

No. You must be enrolled in Original Medicare, Part A and Part B, in order to be eligible to enroll in a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan, Medigap plan, or Medicare Advantage plan. To be eligible for Original Medicare, in most cases you must be age 65 or older. You might qualify for Medicare before the age of 65 if you receive Social Security or certain Railroad Retirement Board benefits.

  • A Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan requires that you be enrolled in Medicare Part A or Part B.
  • However, in order to enroll in either a Medigap plan or a Medicare Advantage plan, you must first be enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B.

Once you have received your red, white, and blue Medicare card in the mail and are officially enrolled in the program, then you have the option to enroll in a Medicare health plan or a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. Many individuals will receive their Medicare cards three months prior to their eligibility; learn about your enrollment options during your Medicare Initial Enrollment Period.
