Risperdal (generic name: risperidone) is a prescription drug that may be prescribed to treat conditions like bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and other mood disorders. According to WebMD, this medication belongs to a class of drugs called antipsychotics.
Prescription drug coverage in Original Medicare, Part A and Part B, is limited. Medicare Part A will usually cover the medications you get during a covered, inpatient hospital or skilled nursing facility stay. If you get prescription drugs in at a doctor’s office or clinic, Medicare Part B covers some medications. These types of drugs are usually not self-administered; they may be injected or infused in some cases.
Medicare Part D covers prescription drugs that aren’t already covered by Medicare Part A and Part B. You may be able to get coverage for Risperdal or risperidone through a stand-alone Medicare prescription drug plan or a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan. Keep in mind that different Medicare Part D plans may cover different prescription drugs. To find out if a specific plan covers the medications you need, check the plan’s drug formulary. A formulary is a list of the prescription drugs that are covered by the Medicare Part D plan. Formularies can change every year. Plans may add or remove drugs from the formulary as new or more effective drugs becoming available, or the Food and Drug Administration releases safety information.
When finding a plan that covers Risperdal or risperidone, make sure that the plan covers the exact form and dosage that you need. Keep in mind that costs like copayments and coinsurance for covered drugs can vary from plan to plan.
Because Medicare Part D plans can change formularies and costs every year, it’s always a good idea to review your coverage annually. As your prescription drug needs change, you may find yourself needing a medication that isn’t covered by your current plan, or you may want to find a lower-cost Medicare Part D plan.
