A prescription for Namenda might have you wondering about Medicare coverage for this medication. Here’s some information for you.
What is Namenda?
One medication that doctors sometimes use to treat symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease is Namenda (or the Namenda generic, memantine hydrochloride), according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
While Namenda won’t cure Alzheimer’s disease, it might temporarily help slow the loss of memory or ability to reason, reports the NIH.
Namenda and Medicare coverage
Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) only offer limited prescription drug coverage. Generally, Part A might cover prescription drugs given to you when you’re a hospital inpatient. Part B may cover medications administered to you as an outpatient. Namenda might not be covered in these situations.
Namenda and Medicare Part D
You might be able to get Medicare prescription drug coverage for Namenda or its generic form, memantine hydrochloride, through a private insurance company that contracts with Medicare. There are two types of Medicare Prescription Drug Plans.
- A stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan to work alongside your Medicare Part A and/or Part B coverage
- A Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan
You can sign up for either type of Medicare Prescription Drug Plan, or switch plans, during certain time periods.
- When you first qualify for Medicare (your Initial Enrollment Period)
- During the Annual Election Period (October 15 through December 7)
- During a Special Election Period (also called a Special Enrollment Period) if you qualify for one
Some Medicare Prescription Drug Plans may cover Namenda or its generic equivalent, memantine hydrochloride. You may want to check the plan’s formulary (list of covered prescription drugs) to see if Namenda is covered. A plan’s formulary may change at any time. You will receive notice when necessary.
Please note that you should discuss medications with your doctor before you take them.
