Original Medicare (Part A and B) does not typically cover prescription drugs like Elavil that you normally would take at home. However, you may be able to get your prescriptions covered if you enroll in a Medicare plan that includes prescription drug coverage.

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, Elavil (under the generic name amitriptyline) is used to treat symptoms of depression. It’s in the class of prescription drugs called tricyclic antidepressants. Amitriptyline (and therefore Elavil) works by boosting the level of a natural substance in your brain to help maintain mental balance.

Medicare plans that include prescription drug coverage might cover Elavil

Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) covers approved medications and supplies that are administered by a health-care provider to treat you if you’re an inpatient in the hospital. Medicare Part B (medical insurance) covers some medications that are administered by a health-care professional while you’re in a medical clinic or doctor’s office. So, again, Original Medicare, Part A and Part B, most likely wouldn’t cover Elavil.

If you’d like help with prescription drug costs, you may want to consider enrolling in a Medicare plan that includes prescription drug coverage.

If you’d like to remain with Original Medicare, you can enroll in a stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan to get coverage for your Elavil and other medications.

Another option is to enroll in a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan. Medicare Advantage is an alternative way to receive your Original Medicare benefits (except for hospice care, which Part A still provides). Please note that you’ll still need to pay your Medicare Part B premium, along with any premium the Medicare Advantage plan requires, in addition to any copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

You should know that every Medicare plan that includes prescription drug coverage has its own “formulary,” or a list of covered medications that can change at any time (you’ll be given notice when necessary). So, when you’re looking for Medicare coverage of Elavil or amitriptyline, check that the plan you’re considering covers this medication. After you’re signed up, keep an eye out for the Annual Notice of Change the plan sends every fall; this tells you about any coverage changes, including specific prescription drugs.
