Do you have allergies and a prescription for Atarax? If you’re a Medicare beneficiary, here’s some information you may find useful.

What is Atarax?

Atarax (generic name hydroxyzine) is a prescription antihistamine. It may be prescribed to treat itchy skin from allergies, and sometimes doctors prescribe Atarax for anxiety, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine (part of the National Institutes of Health). Antihistamines work by blocking histamines, which can cause allergic symptoms. Doctors might prescribe Atarax for anxiety, because it also reduces certain brain activity, according to the National Library of Medicine.

What is Atarax coverage under Original Medicare?

Atarax might not be covered under Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). This federal program only provides limited coverage for prescription medications. As a Medicare beneficiary, you’ll generally be covered for prescription medications that you get in an inpatient hospital setting under Medicare Part A. If you’re administered certain medications as an outpatient, such as in a clinic or doctor’s office, Medicare Part B may cover certain prescription drugs. However, these types of prescription drugs are usually limited to the kind you can’t give yourself, such as medications that must be injected or given by infusion.

How might you get Medicare coverage for Atarax?

Whether you’ve been prescribed Atarax for anxiety, for allergies, or to treat a different symptom, you might be able to get this prescription covered under Medicare Part D. This “part” of Medicare makes prescription drug coverage available through private, Medicare-approved insurance companies.

What is the way to get Atarax coverage through Medicare? There are a couple of different ways you may be able to get prescription drug coverage for medications such as Atarax.

You can enroll in a stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan if you have Medicare Part A and/or Part B and live in the plan’s service area.

Alternatively, if you’re enrolled in both Part A and Part B, you may be able to sign up for a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plan. Through Medicare Advantage, you can receive your Medicare Part A and Part B benefits through a private insurance company that contracts with Medicare. Hospice benefits are the exception; they’re still delivered under Part A instead of through the plan. Many Medicare Advantage plans offer prescription drug benefits, sometimes along with other benefits, such as routine dental services.

What is Atarax coverage with Medicare Prescription Drug Plans?

Prescription drug coverage varies from plan to plan, so when you’re looking for a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan, you may want to check the plan’s drug formulary to see if it includes Atarax or the Atarax generic equivalent, hydroxyzine. A drug formulary is a list of the medications that the plan covers. The formulary may change at any time. You will receive notice from your plan when necessary.

When looking for a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan, you might want to make sure it covers your prescription medications. Also, keep in mind that costs can vary from plan to plan, even for the same prescription medications. Taking the time to compare plans can help you save money.
