Does Medicare cover Norvasc? Doctors may prescribe a brand-name prescription called Norvasc or a generic prescription called amlodipine for some patients experiencing high blood pressure and chest pain (angina), according to the National Institutes of Health. Since Original Medicare only covers prescriptions in very limited cases (as described below), you might need to sign up for a Medicare Part D Prescription Plan to access benefits that might cover this medicine. You could either choose a stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan or a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan.
What is Norvasc?
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that Norvasc is classified as a calcium channel blocker, which works by relaxing blood vessels to keep the heart from having to work as hard to pump blood. In some cases, doctors might prescribe Norvasc in combination with other prescriptions and suggestions for lifestyle changes.
When might Medicare cover Norvasc?
Original Medicare Part A and B won’t typically cover Norvasc. Part A may cover prescription drugs given to you as part of your inpatient treatment in a hospital. Part B generally covers a limited selection of prescriptions that doctors usually administer directly in outpatient clinics. So, if you get your Norvasc prescription filled at a local pharmacy and then take the oral medication at home, it’s not likely that Medicare covers it.
What are Medicare Prescription Drug Plans?
Either a stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan or a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan may help cover Norvasc. Medicare Advantage plans provide another way for Medicare beneficiaries to get their Medicare Part A and Part B benefits, and they often come with prescription drug coverage. With a Medicare Advantage plan, you must continue to pay your Part B premium.
Either kind of Medicare Prescription Plan will include a list of covered prescriptions, called a formulary. Plans can change their formularies, but they must notify their members when necessary.
