Did your doctor prescribe the brand-name prescription called Prinivil or its generic equivalent, lisinopril? In most cases, Original Medicare Part A or Part B won’t cover this oral medication. For coverage of Prinivil or lisinopril, as a Medicare beneficiary, you typically need to enroll in a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan — either a stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan or a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan.
What is Prinivil?
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), doctors may use Prinivil to treat patients with high blood pressure. They might also prescribe this medicine as part of treatment for heart failure. It might also help improve the odds of surviving a heart attack. This prescription medication is classified as an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. It works by relaxing blood vessels, so the heart doesn’t have to work as heard to pump blood.
Will Medicare cover Prinivil?
Part A and Part B of Original Medicare only cover prescription drugs in limited circumstances. Part A may help pay for medication that doctors prescribe as part of inpatient treatment (for example, in the hospital). Part B may only help cover certain that medical providers administer in outpatient hospital facilities and certain clinics. Since most people receive Prinivil at a pharmacy to take at home, it’s not usually covered by either Medicare Part A or Part B.
Some Medicare plan options that may cover Prinivil:
- A stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan may include Prinivil or lisinopril in its formulary, or list of covered prescriptions.
Many Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plans might also cover Prinivil or lisinopril. With a Medicare Advantage plan you will have to continue to pay your Part B premium. Like the stand-alone plan type described above, a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan will also have a formulary.
Note that insurance companies have the right to change their formularies at any time. They will notify you when necessary. This gives you the opportunity to talk to your doctor about other medications to treat your health condition, if your plan stops covering Prinivil.
