Learn about Medicare Supplement insurance in Alaska

Alaska residents enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B have the option to enroll in a Medicare Supplement (Medigap or MedSupp) plan which may help cover the health-care costs that Original Medicare does not cover, including deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and other out-of-pocket costs. In most states, there are ten standardized Medigap policy options, each labeled with a letter with all plans of the same letter offering the same benefits. Please note that some companies may offer additional innovative benefits.

In certain situations, insurance companies are lawfully required to sell or offer Medigap policies to Alaskan Medicare beneficiaries even if they have pre-existing medical conditions. Beneficiaries are said to have guaranteed-issue rights under these circumstances, meaning that insurance companies must offer Medigap policies and cover pre-existing conditions without charging more for a policy (although waiting periods may apply). There are certain times when a beneficiary in Alaska has guaranteed-issue rights – for example: when a Medicare Advantage plan stops offering coverage or a beneficiary moves out of the plan’s service area; when COBRA coverage ends; or when a beneficiary on both Original Medicare and Medicare SELECT moves out of the Medicare SELECT policy’s service area. This is not a complete list of special situations; your State Health Insurance Assistance Program can answer questions about Medigap in your state.

Medigap policy benefits in Alaska do not vary between plans of the same letter name. However, the costs for each plan may vary depending on which carrier is offering the plan and in what part of the state. Alaska Medicare beneficiaries should first see what Medigap policies are available in their state, decide which plan type is best for their health needs, and then customize their search to find a Medicare Supplement insurance plan charging costs suited for their budget.
